local produce from the farmer’s market 27 June 2009

I love that the farmer’s market is back. It’s so nice to be able to talk to the people producing your food (also because they’re all really nice). I heard a guy from Monsanto on the radio last night talking about how they’re going to try to breed flavour back into the seeds they produce. His moment of inspiration came when tasting something out of a home garden that was so much better than produce from the supermarket. He completely lacked a sense of the irony of what he was saying. It’s like trying to fix a hole in the wall with the same sledgehammer you used to make the hole in the first place. *stepping off soapbox now* This is some of the food we got today. There could have been some fresh peas here too but Sherrie got to them first. I managed to wrestle a couple podfuls for P and I but none survived until photo time.

I made these using a super quick light setup posted on Strobist this week. I didn’t have a big enough box to get a lot of compositional flexibility but I was really pleased with the results for the 5 min work it took to set up. Every time I get my flash out I learn more about it.

I had a great time with L and her mom this weekend. She’s really sweet and really expressive. Taking pictures of toddlers is a bit hectic because they just don’t stop moving. The nice thing is that you don’t end up with anything forced. The expressions are perfectly honest.

I had a great time taking some pictures of this sweet little guy. This was the first of two kid sessions I had over the weekend. I was quite pleased with the results. It’s been quite a while since our P was this size. Pics from the other session (a two year old instead of two month old) to come soon.

I was playing with my new flash a bit more today. I was inspired by Niall Benvie’s “The Field Studio” article in the most recent Photo Life to try some white background floral shots. Looking at the results, there are a couple of things that I need to change (a background with the light coming through it instead of reflecting off of it, and more control over the fill light) but I’m happy with the results overall. One of my next projects is to try a similar setup but shoot Through the Viewfinder.

My show in August at Th’Yarc is approaching quickly. I’ve decided that I’m going to print on canvas (probably 16×16) and that all the photos will be done using the Through the Viewfinder technique. Now I just need to narrow down which photos I’m going to use. Any suggestions?

These water drop shots are my first real experiments with my new flash. I used the setup that Gavin Hoey describes in his how-to video (via Strobist). It’s really simple and fun to do. I found that timing the drops was quite tricky but I got a few that I was happy with.
