Photo Life Emerging Photographers

Photo Life Emerging Photographers

Photo Life picked one of my pictures for their annual “Emerging Photographers” issue. I’m really excited about it. I’ve enjoyed reading Photo Life since starting to take photography seriously. I’m not sure if it’s on the stands yet but my subscription copy arrived yesterday. (thanks to Sherrie for the pics)

Jill was kind enough to pose for me so I could practice my portrait lighting. We managed to schedule it during a break in the rain so we could shoot at least in the fog. I heard someone this morning say, “Summer? If I remember right, that was on a Tuesday last year, wasn’t it?” (which may be one of those old weather jokes that everyone rolls their eyes at but I don’t remember having heard it before) I had a lot of fun and am really pleased with a lot of the results.

The backlit shot could use slightly different lighting but I included it because I like the way the flash caught the fog and speckled the background.

These are my favourites of the shots I took during the Yarmouth edition of Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photo Walk yesterday. I chickened out at the initial meetup time because of a torrential downpour. I instead walked a bit later and met up with the group at Rudder’s for supper. The food was delicious, as always, and it was great to see some of the other shots that some of the other braver walkers got.

I had a great time on this session with N at the beach. As always in the Bay of Fundy, the water was cold. He didn’t mind at all and loved playing in the waves. He loved watching them come in to shore so much I had to wade out to be able to get some pictures with him facing me.

Ed Burtynsky on CBC’s Spark 16 July 2009

I’ve been catching up on my podcast subscriptions lately (house painting) and I came across the full interview that Ed Burtynsky did for CBC’s Spark. In it he discusses his idea for ‘The Gallery of the Long Now”  and the concept of longevity in relation to photography generally. I love Spark and am happy it’s moving to a full hour in the fall. I love Ed Burtynsky for being all around excellent. The fact that not only is he a fantastic environmental photographer (more on that title in subsequent post) but is also Canadian puts him pretty far up my favourite photographer list. Pairing Spark and Burtynsky is like putting cake and ice cream together, just right.  I had heard some of the previously aired abridged version but I loved hearing the whole thing. It is definitely worth listening to. (here’s the link to the full interview)
