About Me
I grew up in Saint John, New Brunswick, a city that I still have a love / hate relationship with. I love the friendly people and the sense of history in the downtown. I love the fog and the quiet grey blanket that it wraps the city in on summer nights. I love the bay and the rivers and the forest. I hate that it is such a polluting force and that the inefficient bus system keeps people addicted to their cars. I hate that the city seems bent on replacing industry with box stores and call centres. It’s mostly unused or mismanaged potential that I hate and that potential that I love.
Currently, I live in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Yarmouth is an interesting little town that kind of grows on you like moss on a rock. The rocky shoreline has given me direction and opportunity in my photography. I moved down here after I completed a BA in Philosophy and Great Ideas at Saint Thomas University and my wife completed her BA and B.Ed. She now teaches students who are blind or visually impaired (and has picked up her M.Ed in the process) and absolutely loves it. For more about her, you can check out her blog.
About My Photography
My interest in photography was sparked while thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail. I was frustrated by my inability to visually capture the beauty that I was experiencing every day. I was also intrigued by the possibility of allowing people who for whatever reason could not experience that natural beauty to experience that it in some way. While going through university I thought that photography would be little more than a lifelong hobby. The more that I do it, though, the more that I cannot see myself doing anything else. So, I’m now embarking on a period of self-study to get my photographic skill to the point where I can shoot full-time.
The natural world is the main focus of my work. I love exploring the beautiful ways that natural objects reveal themselves to us. Paying attention to the world through photography changes and challenges my way of viewing my impact on the environment that I live in and its impact on me. Hopefully my photos raise some of the same questions in the viewer that they do in me, the photographer. In a similar way I find images of human impact on the natural world to challenge me creatively. I find hope in finding places where the natural world usurps our attempts at environmental manipulation and the way the natural world heals when left alone.
About This Site
This site is an attempt to bring more cohesiveness to my web presence. Rather than a separate portfolio site, a blog, and a flickr stream, this site is meant to connect the three. Though some things will end up here and not in flickr, and vice versa, there will be much more interaction between those two elements. Creating the site using Wordpress has eliminated the need for an external blog altogether, although you can still check its previous manifestation out here.
To design the site I chopped and modified the Blue Horizon Wordpress theme until I got it to look at least somewhat like what I would like. The site is hosted with Dreamhost (if you sign up with promo code AGPH7, you can have your account set-up fee waived, even if you choose monthly billing).
The Features page currently has three short photo essays that I’ve created. More will be coming. I’m open to submissions and ideas for this section.
The Purchase page is now live for ordering of prints up to 11×14. Sizes larger than that are available in limited edition printings, custom printed and individually inspected by me. For information about these custom prints please e-mail purchase(at)adamgrahamphoto.com .
