This was taken on the ferry between Digby and Saint John. In making this shot I was drawn to the mix of shapes and the contrasting colours. Reviewing it I came to like it because of the way that the dangling hose carries a bit of the red and white down into the green.
More good news today. This is a screengrab of yesterday’s photo as spotlighted on Utata.org today. What does this mean you ask? Well, it means that while it is the newest spotlight a small version of the picture is on the Utata front page. Then it stays in the spotlights archives. It makes for a lot of people seeing my photo. I’m especially delighted because I love Utata so much.
This morning when I was taking this shot my most favourite mail carrier in the world (She’s the most pleasant person I’ve ever talked to. She’s what I’ve always falsely imagined I’d be like if I delivered mail.) walked by and said, “Art can be found in the strangest things.”
The first issue of Photosho, an awesome new Canadian photography magazine, arrived today. All four copies. Why such an obsessive number of copies? Well, that’s the first two pages of a feature of some of my Through the Viewfinder images that they put in a ’shocase’. I also have one image in the regular gallery section of the mag. I’m extremely happy with the feature and the overall quality of the magazine. If you didn’t pre-order, you can buy a copy from their site.
Watch your step. If the the weeds, who clearly are ambitious as can be seen by the way that they reach up the hill, don’t get you the sloping sidewalk might twist your ankle. It’s dangerous out there.
This is two exposures layered together. It actually felt like spring here today. I cleaned the winter carpet of sticks, dried leaves, and garbage off our flower beds. It is also an important day because we had our first barbecue of the season. Very tasty.
I had a really great time shooting Through the Viewfinder images in Saint John, New Brunswick last week. The technique seems to come closer to capturing my feelings about my hometown. This picture captures for me the tension in the city between the natural and industrial. Saint John is built around a gorgeous ice-free harbour that is at the mouth of two powerful rivers (creating Reversing Falls). The coastline is beautiful and just outside the city is an incredible forested wilderness. Yet, it is also a city built on industry, bringing in oil and those trees and belching them right back out.
The thing about this picture though that really captures the feeling of the city for me is the fact that this is a colour photo. I have not touched the colours in my processing. The fog comes in and blankets the city in a quiet gray.
